What is HAIROWorldPlugin?

The HAIROWorldPlugin is an extension for Choreonoid developed by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). As part of the research and development efforts to support decommissioning work at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings' Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, JAEA is developing Choreonoid extensions to simulate decommissioning tasks using robots.

This plugin provides several key features to facilitate these simulations:

  • Support for diverse robot types: Simulates the behavior of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), enabling simulations for robots other than ground-based models.

  • Environmental condition simulation: Replicates operational challenges expected during decommissioning, such as video interference on onboard cameras and communication disruptions.

  • Simulation support: Provides various functions to assist and enhance the simulation process within Choreonoid.

Origin of the Name

The name HAIROWorldPlugin is a combination of "HAIRO" (the Japanese word for "decommissioning") and "HelloWorld," a phrase commonly used in introductory programming.

The name reflects the hope that this plugin will serve as an "entry point" (a first step) for research and development related to the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, as well as for the robotics and simulation technologies involved in the process.
